Why is service important?

The UNC website for pre-medical and pre-dental students states “Extracurriculars are a very important part of the applicant's materials. Most medical schools place emphasis on volunteer community service. Some volunteer experience in a medical/dental setting is a must.” Not only is community service essential for gaining acceptance into almost any health related field, but it should also be integrated into the life of any responsible citizen.

What are the service requirements for AED?

AED requires 6 in-club and 6 out of club service hours each semester for each member (anyone who started pledging before Fall 2008 qualifies as a member for these purposes) and 8 in-club/8 out for each pledge starting in Fall 2009. In club activities include any service that AED might perform as a group (Health Fair, Ronald McDonald House, blood drive, etc.) or any other activities approved by the volunteer chair (Hari Ramalingam). Out of club service activities are suggested below. Documentation is needed for all service hours (signature, form). Please turn in the service hour forms at the meetings.

You get to spend an average 1-2 flexible hours per week with a student, most of which will include our wide range of events: underground bowling, ice-skating, museum tours, and on-campus movie nights, basketball tournaments, field days, etc. The great thing about the Big Buddy program is that you and your little buddy figure out how you want to spend your time together.
